Each promised freedom to slaves and servants who would join their cause. Mobilizing the poor farmers on the frontier to vent their frustrations first by attacking innocent Native Americans, Bacon attracted a large following who, like him, wanted to kill or drive out every Indian in Virginia.
Also, throughout the 1660's, tobacco prices were painfully low and Virginia planters struggled economically. The costs of producing tobacco remained too high compared to the prices paid for the annual crops.
