After Nathaniel Bacon's death 1676, the rebellion was stopped. The Tidewaters were unwilling to pay the free indentured servants and looked for a new source of labor. They found their source of labor in Africa were some 10 million African slaves were carried to The New World. Only about 400,000 to 500,000 ended up in North America.
By the 1680s Indentured Servants were no longer used. Many of the poor whites in England were not willing to do indentured servitude. With the end of Indentured Servitude, the population of African slaves sharply increased. Between 1700-1750 slaves accounted for half of the population Virginia and two-thirds of the population in Maryland.
