Bacon left Jamestown, but on June 23 he stormed back into the capital with about 500 men and demanded that the governor commission him as a general to lead the colony against the Indians. A dramatic and dangerous scene followed, with Bacon's men drawing their arms against the assembled burgesses and the governor literally baring his chest and daring Bacon's men to shoot him. Berkeley nevertheless yielded to the demands of Bacon and his supporters.
